There are no quick fixes in health.  Whether you are training for a specific event or focusing on recovering from a surgery or chronic illness, progress takes time, persistence and commitment.  Sometimes, we can get a quick boost to jump start our journey.  And this is the case with IV nutrient therapy!   IV therapy is a fantastic way to get nutrients quickly into your bloodstream and elevate your health right away.

Of course it is exceedingly unlikely a single IV therapy treatment will fix all your ailments. Nothing can offer immediate long-term results. Your health requires regular attention to see long-term results and thrive.

But only one IV treatment has the potential to improve water and electrolyte loss from dehydration, improve energy, reduce pain, and boost immunity. Regular IV nutrient therapy sessions — along with a nutrient-rich diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle strategies, of course! — may help to improve fibromyalgia, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, muscle spasms, muscle pain, reduce headaches and migraines, upper respiratory tract infections, asthma, and other health concerns. And unlike many treatment options that require your full participation, with IV therapy, you can just sit back and relax while feeding your body with nutrients.

Sounds great, right?! I’m so excited to share everything you need to know about IV therapy before signing up for your first session.

IV therapy

What Is IV Therapy?

Chances are, you’ve heard the term IV before. IV fluids are liquids that are injected into your veins through intravenous (IV) tubes. Doctors commonly use IV fluids in hospitals for dehydration and balancing electrolyte levels if you are sick with vomiting or diarrhea or dehydrated due to exercise or a heatstroke, if you have a serious injury or burn, or had surgery.

However, we can use IV drips for therapeutic purposes even if you are not sick at the hospital or recovering from surgery or a serious injury. IV therapy is an increasingly popular form of alternative treatment we love in functional medicine. IV therapy is also known as IV nutrient therapy, IV vitamin therapy, IV vitamin drips, or simply IV drips.

No matter which term you prefer, IV therapy is a fantastic way to support your body with vitamins and other nutrients intravenously. These custom blends of saltwater solutions with specific nutrients are tailored towards your needs to improve a variety of health issues, reduce your risk of health problems, and improve your overall health. These saltwater solutions are made at a similar concentration to the salinity of your blood. By adding micronutrients and other nutrients into this saline mix, IV therapy can offer your body a more concentrated form of nutrients and a much higher dose than food, supplements, or superfood mixes.

IV therapy is commonly offered at functional medicine clinics, holistic health centers, IV nutrient therapy facilities, and spas. Health warriors like you commonly use them for dehydration, food poisoning, jet lag, digestive issues, respiratory problems, hangovers, immune support, chronic pain, and all kinds of other ailments.

The Myers Cocktail is possibly the most popular IV therapy that offers a mix of vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium, and magnesium to improve immune health, muscle spasms, muscle pain, chronic pain, fatigue, fibromyalgia, headaches, migraines, upper respiratory tract infections, asthma, and other health concerns.

Later in this article, I will share how our Myer’s Cocktail at The Spring Center is superior to other Myer’s Cocktails out there. Stay tuned. But first, let’s talk about the benefits of IV therapy.

Benefits of IV Nutrient Therapy

I’m so excited to share the incredible health benefits of IV therapy. Let’s get into it:

Get Nutrients Quickly and Correct Nutrient Deficiencies

IV nutrient therapy is possibly the best way to get nutrients into your body quickly. While foods, juices, and supplements first have to enter and move through your digestive system before entering your bloodstream, IV therapy skips this step. It is basically cutting out the middleman and intravenously delivering much-needed nutrients into your bloodstream right away.

This is incredibly important if you are in need of micronutrients very quickly, for example, if you are severely dehydrated. Skipping the digestive system may be a major benefit if you are dealing with digestive issues, malabsorption, or gastrointestinal (GI) issues. It is also a fantastic option for improving nutrient deficiencies and related health problems.

You may develop nutrient deficiencies due to GI issues, malabsorption, eating disorders, low-nutrient diets, restrictive diets due to health concerns, very low-calorie intake, surgeries, and other health issues. Nutrient deficiencies may cause weight loss, diarrhea, digestive issues, anemia, and poor immune health. It’s a common underlying factor behind many chronic symptoms and chronic health problems. Getting nutrients into your system quickly and efficiently may help to improve nutrient deficiencies and reduce related issues (1).

Decreasing Inflammation, Pain, and Chronic Health Issues

Chronic inflammation is one of the main root causes of most chronic symptoms and modern-day chronic diseases. If you are dealing with chronic pain, migraines, headaches, muscle aches, fatigue, digestive issues, and other chronic issues, chances are, you need to address underlying chronic inflammation.

Fortunately, we have IV nutrient therapy to help with that. Research has shown that one of the major benefits of IV therapy is reducing inflammatory markers, thus reducing related health issues (2). The Myer’s Cocktail has been known to improve pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia (3). Besides fibromyalgia, IV vitamin drips may help to decrease symptoms of arthritis, chronic fatigue, and other inflammatory conditions (4).

Improving Your Energy

My patients love the energy-boosting benefits of IV therapy. They come in weighed down with fatigue, malaise, and pain, and leave energized as a brand-new person. Research has shown that IV nutrient therapy may help to improve low energy (4). One 2012 study found that it may help to reduce fatigue among office workers (5). Yeap, IV drops are not only great for improving physical energy, but they may help to boost your mental energy and brain power (6). Perhaps it’s time to switch your morning Joe to an IV nutrient boost.

Boosting Your Mental Health

Nutrient deficiencies, physical imbalances, and chronic inflammation may increase your risk or worsen your symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues (7, 8). Correcting these imbalances may help to improve your symptoms and boost your mental well-being. IV nutrient therapy may be a great tool for reducing symptoms of nervousness, anxiety, and mood imbalances (7). B vitamins are particularly great for improving stress, anxiety, and depression (8).

Support Your Heart Health

IV therapy may also help to improve your cardiovascular health, for example, improving hypertension (7). Magnesium may be a particularly powerful nutrient for reducing cardiovascular risk factors (9). Calcium is fantastic for improving blood lipids, blood pressure, and oxidative stress markers (10). Certain amino acids, especially l-arginine, are great for relaxing your blood vessels, reducing high blood pressure, and decreasing the risk of heart health issues (11).

Supporting Weight Loss

Many of my patients are coming to our office with weight concerns. While weight loss is not our main goal, it is often a necessary part of your health journey. Using IV nutrient therapy can offer a quick boost of nutrients, decrease nutrient deficiencies, and as a result, may reduce cravings. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and carnitine are particularly great for supporting weight loss (12, 13). They may both help to break down fat and improve your metabolism. Of course, you can forget about a nutrient-dense diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices. IV therapy is just a bit of extra support.

Improving Dehydration and Hangovers

IV nutrient therapy is also great for dehydration and hangovers. Of course, I’m not recommending drinking excessively. Hangovers are not fun, and excessive drinking is not good news for your health. But if it happens, IV nutrient therapy can help to replenish the water and electrolytes you’ve lost from drinking too much and can reduce fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and muscle pains you may experience due to hangovers and dehydration (14, 16, 17). IV therapy is great for non-hangover-related dehydration, too, of course. For example, if you experience dehydration because of the stomach flu, traveler’s diarrhea, heat stroke, or excessive exercise, you may try IV drips to recover your body quickly (18, 19).

Preparing for Surgery with IV Therapy

Recently, some patients have included IVs into the pre-operative preparation, right along with getting an EKG and blood work!  One man’s shoulder replacement was so successful that the doctor was astounded at how healthy the tissue was and how speedy his recovery was.  This particular patient incorporated a series of IV nutrients before and soon after his surgery, and now we recommend IVs to all patients surrounding their procedures.

Pros and Cons of IV Therapy

I love IV nutrient therapy! This doesn’t mean that it’s for everyone and for every situation. IV therapy has many pros, but also a few cons to consider before you sign up for your first session. I recommend speaking with your functional medicine doctor first to see if IV therapy is right for you and what IV nutrient drips they recommend.

Here is a quick rundown of the pros and cons of IV nutrient therapy:

Pros of IV nutrient therapy:

  • IV therapy is bioavailable: IV nutrient therapy is incredibly bioavailable, meaning it’s the best, most thorough and efficient way to get vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients into your body.
  • IV therapy can be customized to your needs: There are so many IV drip cocktails to choose from, and your practitioner can customize them based on your body’s needs and your personal health goals.
  • IV therapy keeps you hydrated: IV nutrient therapy is essentially a saltwater solution with vitamins, electrolytes, and other nutrients. Electrolytes are essential for keeping your body hydrated. IV therapy is a fantastic option for addressing dehydration due to the stomach flu, traveler’s diarrhea, a hangover, or exercise.
  • IV therapy may improve your energy and health: IV therapy can offer a quick boost of energy, decrease fatigue, reduce chronic symptoms, and improve your overall health.
  • IV therapy may help to slow down aging: Glutathione, known as the master antioxidant, is a popular ingredient in some IV therapy mixes as it helps to hydrate your skin, reduce signs of aging, and decreases oxidative stress which is the hallmark of chronic disease and aging.

Cons of IV nutrient therapy:

  • IV therapy is not a long-term solution: Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes — not in the long run, anyway. IV therapy can offer a quick boost of energy and lead to short-term improvement. But long-term health requires a nutrient-dense diet, exercise, lots of sleep, low stress levels, and other healthy lifestyle practices. IV nutrient therapy offers bonus support, but it’s not a one-stop solution.
  • IV therapy facilities are not created equal: IV nutrient therapy is available at so many providers, from health centers to spas. They are not created equal. I recommend that you visit a reputable clinic with qualified professionals and excellent reviews. Hint: If you are in our area, we offer IV nutrient therapy at The Spring Center!
  • IV therapy can be costly: Unfortunately, IV nutrient therapy is not cheap. Depending on your location, the IV practice of your choice, and the IV drip mix you need, one IV nutrient therapy session can cost $150 to $500, if not more. Talk to your provider and see if they offer packages, holiday offers, or other options to reduce your costs.
  • IV therapy may have some side effects: Side effects are not major, but there may be some. Getting an IV may hurt a little. Some people may experience minor redness, swelling, or bruising around the site of injection, but this shouldn’t last long. As with an injury, there is a small chance of infection, but visiting a trained professional that practices appropriate safety measures, can seriously reduce, near eliminate, these risks.
  • IV therapy has some risks: A nutrient boost sounds great, right? But too much of certain nutrients can also turn into an issue. I recommend that you start with lab testing and a consultation with your functional medicine doctor before getting IV nutrient therapy to ensure you are getting the right nutrients and not getting too much of anything (20).
  • IV therapy may not be helpful: Most people love IV nutrient therapy. They rave about immediate effects and long-term results. But this is not the case for everyone. And in some cases, it may be just a placebo (21). If you are interested in IV nutrient therapy, you just have to see it for yourself. Talk to your functional medicine doctor to see if it’s right for you. Once you have the green light, try it out, and see how you feel. If it works for you, great! If it’s not your jam, no problem. There are so many tools in functional medicine to support your body and regain your health.

  • Chromium may be recommended to support normal blood sugar levels and metabolism in the metabolism and storage of carbohydrates, protein, and fat (37, 38).
  • Zinc may be a fantastic choice for enhancing the immune system, adequate wound healing, and the formation of RNA and DNA (22, 24).
  • Lactated ringers contain sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and sodium lactate in sterile water and are used to correct electrolyte loss (39, 40).

What to Expect at an IV Nutrient Therapy Session?

IV nutrient therapy sessions generally last between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the custom blend you are getting and your body’s unique needs. The initial injection may hurt a bit, though most of our patients don’t feel anything. You will likely feel the energizing and rejuvenating effects of your IV nutrient drip almost immediately.

While the IV drip is sending a nourishing nutrient mix into your body, you can relax. Many patients love to listen to music or read. Some even take a nap in our comfortable chairs. It is a great time for journaling and meditation. While we will do everything to ensure a comfortable and safe environment, feel free to bring your favorite pillow or blanket along. It’s up to you, but I recommend that you choose an activity that is nourishing for your soul. Remember, healing is a mind-body-soul practice. At The Spring Center, our IV practitioner, Julie, is right there with you to answer any questions or attend to your needs.
