Chances are, you’ve heard the term IV before. IV fluids are liquids that are injected into your veins through intravenous (IV) tubes. Doctors commonly use IV fluids in hospitals for dehydration and balancing electrolyte levels if you are sick with vomiting or diarrhea or dehydrated due to exercise or a heatstroke, if you have a serious injury or burn, or had surgery.

However, we can use IV drips for therapeutic purposes even if you are not sick at the hospital or recovering from surgery or a serious injury. IV therapy is an increasingly popular form of alternative treatment we love in functional medicine. IV therapy is also known as IV nutrient therapy, IV vitamin therapy, IV vitamin drips, or simply IV drips.

No matter which term you prefer, IV therapy is a fantastic way to support your body with vitamins and other nutrients intravenously. These custom blends of saltwater solutions with specific nutrients are tailored towards your needs to improve a variety of health issues, reduce your risk of health problems, and improve your overall health. These saltwater solutions are made at a similar concentration to the salinity of your blood. By adding micronutrients and other nutrients into this saline mix, IV therapy can offer your body a more concentrated form of nutrients and a much higher dose than food, supplements, or superfood mixes.

I’m so excited to share the incredible health benefits of IV therapy. Let’s get into it:

Get Nutrients Quickly and Correct Nutrient Deficiencies

IV nutrient therapy is possibly the best way to get nutrients into your body quickly. While foods, juices, and supplements first have to enter and move through your digestive system before entering your bloodstream, IV therapy skips this step. It is basically cutting out the middleman and intravenously delivering much-needed nutrients into your bloodstream right away.

This is incredibly important if you are in need of micronutrients very quickly, for example, if you are severely dehydrated. Skipping the digestive system may be a major benefit if you are dealing with digestive issues, malabsorption, or gastrointestinal (GI) issues. Many of my patients are coming to our office with weight concerns. While weight loss is not our main goal, it is often a necessary part of your health journey. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and carnitine are particularly great for supporting weight loss (12, 13). They may both help to break down fat and improve your metabolism. Pros and Cons of IV Therapy

I love IV nutrient therapy! This doesn’t mean that it’s for everyone and for every situation. IV therapy has many pros, but also a few cons to consider before you sign up for your first session. I recommend speaking with your functional medicine doctor first to see if IV therapy is right for you and what IV nutrient drips they recommend.

Here is a quick rundown of the pros and cons of IV nutrient therapy:

Pros of IV nutrient therapy:

  • IV therapy is bioavailable: IV nutrient therapy is incredibly bioavailable, meaning it’s the best, most thorough and efficient way to get vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients into your body.
  • IV therapy can be customized to your needs: There are so many IV drip cocktails to choose from, and your practitioner can customize them based on your body’s needs and your personal health goals.
  • IV therapy keeps you hydrated: IV nutrient therapy is essentially a saltwater solution with vitamins, electrolytes, and other nutrients. Electrolytes are essential for keeping your body hydrated. IV therapy is a fantastic option for addressing dehydration due to the stomach flu, traveler’s diarrhea, a hangover, or exercise.
  • IV therapy may improve your energy and health: IV therapy can offer a quick boost of energy, decrease fatigue, reduce chronic symptoms, and improve your overall health.
  • IV therapy may help to slow down aging: Glutathione, known as the master antioxidant, is a popular ingredient in some IV therapy mixes as it helps to hydrate your skin, reduce signs of aging, and decreases oxidative stress which is the hallmark of chronic disease and aging.

Cons of IV nutrient therapy:

  • IV therapy is not a long-term solution: Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes — not in the long run, anyway. IV therapy can offer a quick boost of energy and lead to short-term improvement. But long-term health requires a nutrient-dense diet, exercise, lots of sleep, low stress levels, and other healthy lifestyle practices. IV nutrient therapy offers bonus support, but it’s not a one-stop solution.
  • IV therapy facilities are not created equal: IV nutrient therapy is available at so many providers, from health centers to spas. They are not created equal. I recommend that you visit a reputable clinic with qualified professionals and excellent reviews. Hint: If you are in our area, we offer IV nutrient therapy at The Spring Center!
  • IV therapy can be costly: Unfortunately, IV nutrient therapy is not cheap. Depending on your location, the IV practice of your choice, and the IV drip mix you need, one IV nutrient therapy session can cost $150 to $500, if not more. Talk to your provider and see if they offer packages, holiday offers, or other options to reduce your costs.
  • IV therapy may have some side effects: Side effects are not major, but there may be some. Getting an IV may hurt a little. Some people may experience minor redness, swelling, or bruising around the site of injection, but this shouldn’t last long. As with an injury, there is a small chance of infection, but visiting a trained professional that practices appropriate safety measures, can seriously reduce, near eliminate, these risks.
  • IV therapy has some risks: A nutrient boost sounds great, right? But too much of certain nutrients can also turn into an issue. I recommend that you start with lab testing and a consultation with your functional medicine doctor before getting IV nutrient therapy to ensure you are getting the right nutrients and not getting too much of anything (20).
  • IV therapy may not be helpful: Most people love IV nutrient therapy. They rave about immediate effects and long-term results. But this is not the case for everyone. And in some cases, it may be just a placebo (21). If you are interested in IV nutrient therapy, you just have to see it for yourself. Talk to your functional medicine doctor to see if it’s right for you. Once you have the green light, try it out, and see how you feel. If it works for you, great! If it’s not your jam, no problem. There are so many tools in functional medicine to support your body and regain your health.

What to Expect at an IV Nutrient Therapy Session?

IV nutrient therapy sessions generally last between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the custom blend you are getting and your body’s unique needs. The initial injection may hurt a bit, though most of our patients don’t feel anything. You will likely feel the energizing and rejuvenating effects of your IV nutrient drip almost immediately.

While the IV drip is sending a nourishing nutrient mix into your body, you can relax. Many patients love to listen to music or read. Some even take a nap in our comfortable chairs. It is a great time for journaling and meditation. While we will do everything to ensure a comfortable and safe environment, feel free to bring your favorite pillow or blanket along. It’s up to you, but I recommend that you choose an activity that is nourishing for your soul. Remember, healing is a mind-body-soul practice.
