Every day, we’re exposed to a growing list of chemicals – many of which weren’t even on our radar just a few decades ago. From what we put on our skin to what we breathe in our homes, toxins can sneak into our lives in ways we don’t always realize. And while our bodies are resilient, they’re not invincible.
As a functional medicine provider, I’ve seen firsthand how even low levels of toxin exposure can contribute to chronic health issues – whether it’s stubborn weight gain, brain fog, or hormonal imbalances. The truth is, these toxins build up over time, and our detox systems can get overloaded.
But the good news?
We have more control than we think. By making small, intentional changes in our everyday lives, we can lighten the toxin load and protect our health for the long term.

The Science of Toxins: How They Harm the Body
When we talk about toxins and toxicants, it’s important to understand the difference. Toxins are naturally occurring substances, often produced by living organisms like plants, bacteria, or fungi, that can harm humans. Environmental toxicants, on the other hand, are synthetic or man-made chemicals found in our environment – from pesticides and plastics to household cleaners and industrial pollutants.
We often hear about environmental toxicants in the abstract – floating around in the air or lurking in household items – but how do they actually affect us on a deeper level?
It’s one thing to know they exist, but another to understand how they impact your health. While incredibly efficient, our bodies aren’t designed to handle the vast amount of chemical exposure we face daily.
So, what happens when toxins enter the body?
Once inside, these toxins can wreak havoc on multiple systems. They may not always cause immediate symptoms, but they disrupt our body’s natural balance over time, contributing to chronic conditions.
Here are some key ways environmental toxicants affect your health:
Endocrine Disruptors
Some chemicals, like Bisphenol A (BPA) (found in hard plastics) or phthalates (found in personal care products and soft plastics), can mimic hormones – particularly estrogen – throwing off the delicate hormonal balance in both men and women. (1)
These chemicals bind to hormone receptors, creating a hormone imbalance that can lead to issues like infertility, metabolic disorders, and even cancer. (2, 3, 4)
Research shows that exposure to BPA can affect both male and female reproductive systems and may contribute to breast and prostate cancers due to its estrogenic activity. (5) Phthalates are linked to reduced sperm quality, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and thyroid dysregulation. (6)
One particularly alarming characteristic of endocrine-disrupting chemicals is their potential to have more significant effects at low doses due to a phenomenon called hormesis. Unlike the typical dose-response relationship seen with other environmental chemicals – where higher doses cause greater harm – these disruptors can create profound physiological changes even at minimal exposure, meaning small amounts might lead to disproportionately large consequences. Oxidative Stress and Inflammation
Toxic metals like mercury, cadmium, arsenic, lead, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like certain pesticides (DDT), PCBs, and flame retardants contribute to oxidative stress, where excess free radicals lead to cellular damage. (10)
This can cause chronic inflammation, which is a known precursor to various diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative conditions. Studies suggest that chronic low-level exposure to heavy metals can induce systemic inflammation, contributing to atherosclerosis and autoimmune conditions. (11, 12)
Antioxidants can help mitigate some of this damage, but reducing toxin exposure is critical to minimizing the burden.
Neurotoxins
Neurotoxins like mercury, lead, and certain pesticides can directly interfere with the nervous system, particularly affecting cognitive function. These toxins can cross the blood-brain barrier, damaging neurons and synapses crucial for brain function. (13)
Long-term exposure is linked to memory loss, developmental delays, and increased risks of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. (14, 15) For instance, mercury exposure is associated with neurodevelopmental issues in children, while lead exposure has been connected to cognitive decline and behavioral disorders.
Additionally, both older pesticides like DDT and non-persistent pesticides have been implicated in the development of Parkson’s disease. (16)
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and solvents further contribute to brain inflammation, which is often associated with depression and other mental health disorders. (17)
It’s a reminder that mental health is intricately tied to neuroinflammation, highlighting the importance of reducing exposure to these harmful substances. (18)
Bioaccumulation
Unlike other chemicals that the body can quickly metabolize and excrete, toxins like heavy metals and POPs tend to accumulate in the body over time, especially in fat tissues.
This process, called bioaccumulation, means that even low-level exposure over time can result in significant toxin buildup, increasing the risk of chronic diseases. (19)
POPs, like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins, are notorious for accumulating in tissues and contributing to issues like hormone disruption and immune system dysfunction.
Regular fasting, juicing, or colon cleanses will NOT effectively remove these toxicants – targeted protocols, under the guidance of a functional medicine physician, are essential for safe detoxification.

Here are nine easy swaps you can make to cultivate a healthier, toxin-free environment at home and in your personal care products, helping to safeguard your family’s health and promote a more vibrant life.
1. Ditch Non-Stick Cookware for Cast Iron or Ceramic Coated Options
I’ve swapped out my non-stick pans for cast iron and high-quality ceramic-coated cookware, like those from Chef’s Foundry. I’ve transitioned to organic cotton sheets and bamboo pillowcases, and the difference in quality and health benefits is remarkable.
Conventional cotton is heavily treated with pesticides, which can remain in the fabric and affect our health. Organic options are free from these harmful chemicals, providing a safer sleep environment.
Plus, bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking, and super soft!
Think about it, we spend a third of our lives in bed! This simple swap is a quick and easy way to reduce our exposure while we sleep!
4. Replace Conventional Cleaning Products with Natural Alternatives
I make my own cleaning solutions using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. Conventional cleaning products often contain harmful chemicals that can cause respiratory issues and skin irritations. Natural alternatives are just as effective at keeping my home clean without the toxic load.

For proteins, I prioritize organic, wild-caught fish to avoid mercury and other contaminants, along with organic, grass-fed, grass-finished beef, which contains more omega-3s and antioxidants. Free-range chicken and eggs have a better fatty acid profile, and organic dairy reduces hormone exposure.
I also consider packaging – opting for paper-wrapped cuts from the butcher over plastic, which prevents leaching chemicals like BPA and phthalates into my food.
Each choice may seem small, but together, they support a healthier, toxin-free lifestyle that aligns with my values on sustainability and wellness.
Shopping at your local farmer’s market is a good way to get healthy, locally grown, organic products and support your local food vendors in the process!
8. Filter Your Air with Quality Air Purifiers
If you live near a bustling city, along busy roadways, or in regions at risk for wildfires, it’s crucial to be proactive about your air quality.
